    Genuinely surprised at the difference .... though telling myself, would it matter in a mix ? Also it would be interesting to hear a few wireless systems tested the same way as this, and maybe against a variety of cables too ..... Now you need to replace all your patch cables with the high quality stuff too .... I always mocked the yngwie malmsteen cable , even his plecs are £2 GBP each for a dumb signature, but maybe theres something to the cable quality afterall

Divine Noise another product where the builder takes care in the product, Klotz make exceptional Head to Cabinet speaker cables, Free the Tone patch cable and ends. Your cables can be a blessing or a burden in my experience, If your purchasing $$$ stomp boxes $$$ power solutions for your pedal board unless your routing solutions aren't up to a standard your initial stages of your recorded tone won't be so don't rip your self off.

    I have a selection nice cables (OG Colossal, OG Lava, DIY Belden 9778, Belden 8412, Mogami Gold and DIY Mogami) and sometimes the fatness of my old Lava retro-coil cable just sounds best with all that capacitance. The capacitance per meter (and hence also the length) makes a huge difference in brightness and body. Apart from that, the reliability of the connectors and interference shielding are important live, but hard to qualify. Not a cable snob either, but I do check the capacitance carefully and if it has connectors with some strain relief moulding that look that they can take some abuse. Then again, Hendrix had long runs of shitty cable and no problem getting the point across...

    • @BigHairyGuitars

      Do they list the capacitance rating on cables?

    • @CorNigrum
      @CorNigrum 3 дні тому

      @@BigHairyGuitars Klotz, Cordial, Van Damme, Lava and many others do. For instance Van Damme Silver series you can get in lo-cap, flat-cap and hi-cap variants; the only difference should be the cable capacitance, so that's about as close as one can get to compare the effect of capacitance on sound. Sometimes you have to look at the bulk cable specs instead of the retail packaging to find out the manufacturer's stated pF/m. Some are really hard to find out though, like the popular Ernie Ball ones... My guess is that's because it's not always the same bulk cable they use in their products. Many multimeters can measure capacitance, so you can test it yourself.

      It adds up, but I couldn't find ratings for many of the lower and mid priced cables.

    • @CorNigrum
      @CorNigrum 2 дні тому

      @@BigHairyGuitars Those lower priced brands don't make their own cables and probably repackage whatever they find on the market. Last year's cable might come from a very different manufacturer than this year's, even if they come in the same branded packaging. I assume that's why they are unclear in their marketing materials about the specs of the bulk cable they used.

    Feel like trying speaker cables next? It makes a difference when you are running your big amps hot into a loadbox. AMYOC: always make your own cables. Redco audio is your friend. Ten foot Mogami 2524 with Amphenol or Neutrik connects is about $20 in materials. I can solder up 8-10 full guitar cables in an hour. Mogami 10 footer from GC is like $75. You do the math on how much per hour they charge to do seriously brain dead soldering.

    The tonal difference comes from the cable capacitance. The cable forms an RC lowpass filter with the output impedance of the signalsource and the capacitance of the cable. This will be very noticable whenever you drive a cable with a high impedance source, like a passive guitar pickup. You can kinda think of it as like gradually turning down the tone knob on your guitar. A "better" cable will have less capacitance per meter, than a "bad" one. The overall capacitance a cable has is just the product of it's lenght and relative capacitance. Now the higher the overall capacitance is, the lower the cutoff frequency will be. If you use a low impedance source to drive the cable, like a buffer, a pedal or active pickups this lowpass effect will be negligible, because the cutoff frequency will be way above the human hearing range. So no need to junk that red cable, just make sure to use it after a buffer. Some people actually like the high end roll off of a "bad" cable, so the technically better cable might sound worse to them, than an technically inferior cable. That whole tonal diagramm and polarity thing is marketing BS.

    • @UncleBensRice
      @UncleBensRice 3 дні тому

      @@BigHairyGuitars Assuming they were all the same length, the LaGrange would have the lowest total capacitance, and highest cutoff frequency. The Fender cable is proabably around 130-150pF/m and maybe also longer than the Klotz cables, so the overall capacitance will be the highest out of the four cables. Therefore it will have the lowest cutoff frequency and sound the dullest. The difference between 65, 70 and 75 pF/m is kinda negligible, they all sounded the same to me, only the Fender really stood out to me. Cheap cable will easily have 130 or more pF/m. I personally use Sommer Cable the Spirit LLX which only has 52pF/m because I like less high end roll-off. The rest of the board and the amps are wired up with cheaper cordial cable that has more capacitance. All the pedals and fx-loops are low impedance therefore the higher capacitance doesn't have any negative effect. I would also encurage everybody here to pickup a soldering iron and start building their own cables. The prices for these pre made high end cables are kinda ridiculous. You can easily buy up high quality cable and pair of neutrik plugs for less than 20$ and build yourself a nice 10 or 15ft cable. And if anything breaks you are able to fix it yourself.

    • @epstone81
      @epstone81 2 дні тому

      Using Sommer The Spirit with Neutrik Plugs and Cordial for the Board with short bodied Switchcraft plugs. Solder all cables myself. For me this works pretty well and it's durable. In this test I actually liked the Fender cable with the high gain amp a little better, as the highs were not too harsh.

    • @vextract4662
      @vextract4662 2 дні тому

      I think I understood most of this lol 😆. We can conclude that say an Eric Johnson wouldn't want the la grange as the highs are to piercing for all that solo work with his "violin " tone? Probably why JB like the sig cable he had made? Bit more tame in the leads and he is a big volume knob guy. Mic'd steel like a 12ver might be amazing with all the sparkle you get from the LA grange cable, then eq could level everything. Thanks for your comments. I played in a metal group a while back, and the other guitarist was like "Well that other cable is better you should use it". I was like "huh really". OK so some guys hear differences right away.

    The red cable should be fine with active pickups.

    cool test. i'd be curious if using a quality buffer would decrease the difference significantly.

    Been using Mogami in the studio and in the rig for years now, they are my gold standard.

      My entire studio wiring is Mogami. I always feel comfortable with Mogami, but have never tried them for guitar cables.

      I bought a Mogami cable for shits and giggles two years agp and was very surprised by the difference. Use it every time i play, studio or my room at home.

    That’s gonna be one of those deep tone secrets…ya gotta get a Klotz La Grange cable, but plug it in backwards, with the guitar side at the amp! 😎🤣

    I always believed in using good cables just because I could hear the difference, same with pedal patch cables. And this video proves it too.

      I use mogami cables also. I used their patch cables for a while but I started using the Ernie Ball flat patch cables and didn’t notice any difference between the two. They are both better than George Ls though lol

      @MattW4319 Also use the flat ernie ball patch cables. I haven't done any comparisons but I REALLY like how small they made the 1/4 plugs.

      @@benspeeds I use those too, and George L's for bits here and there. Seems to sound good, and very functional for sure!
